The last carton on the pallet might make it look done, but transport-readiness is about more than just looks. The base, stacking pattern, restraint and identification all must withstand forklift handling, road vibration and contact with other freight. Distance magnifies small weaknesses. A loose bottom carton may shift the load on top of it and a damaged board may break when the pallet is lifted at a depot far away from the sender.
Packaging is easiest to prepare if it is considered an engineering problem. The load has weight, center of gravity and surfaces that need support. Cartons have limits on compression and stretch film can only do so much to hold a poorly shaped stack together. By considering those factors before wrapping begins, warehouse teams can build a stable unit that is safer to handle and less prone to preventable damage upon arrival.
Start with a solid foundation
For pallet transport interstate, the first inspection should be the pallet itself. Boards should be one piece, blocks secure and the deck fit for the weight carried. Product should sit within the footprint wherever possible as overhang removes support from the edges of the carton and exposes goods to impact. A strong base gives the rest of the packaging system a solid something to work from on each lift and transfer.
Heavy, strong cartons should be placed at the bottom and the column should be as even as the product will allow. Some boxes benefit from interlocking patterns for added stability, while other packaging is more effective when the vertical edges line up. Big voids invite movement. • If products are of widely different shapes, separators or smaller inner cartons can be used to form a more uniform load, rather than using excessive film to force irregular items into a single bundle.
Stacking is an exercise in weight distribution.
Stretch Wrap should be used to secure the load to the pallet and not just wrap the cartons. The overlap begins low and controlled to connect the stack to the base. Edge protectors can be used to protect edges and increase vertical strength. Straps might be suitable for dense or stiff goods. Restraint should be tight, not so tight as to crush packaging. If cartons visibly buckle during wrapping, the method is to solve the problem of movement by causing some other damage.
If goods can be stacked or exposed in transfers, the top protection is worth considering. A cap sheet can lessen dust or moisture intrusion. A hard top layer can distribute light pressure. If you can not stack anything on the pallet, you must say that, not assume that. Non-stackable loads can impact trailer planning, so communicating the need prior to pickup allows the carrier to allocate space fairly.
Wraps Should Restrain, Not Cloak
Labels are functional packaging, because they tell every handler exactly where the pallet goes. Delivery details and consignment identifiers should be visible after wrapping and not placed across seams that can tear. If one side is blocked, duplicate labels on the facing sides make scanning much easier. Special instructions are supposed to be short and to the point, and a pallet covered in warning stickers makes the really important message harder to see.

The Final Label is Part of the Package
“A good palate has its own logic.” Whoever is handling it can see where to lift it, how stable it is and to which consignment it belongs. With that clarity, a long journey becomes less a matter of luck. The time taken to select a sound base, distribute weight and apply restraint correctly is generally far less than the time taken for damaged stock, rework and investigation following avoidable failure.
